How Long Can You Drive a UK Car in Spain?
If you are visiting, you can drive your UK car in Spain for up to six months. If you live in Spain, the answer is very different: residents must register an imported car within 30 days, or 60 days when claiming the tax exemption for moving home.
Visitors: the six-month rule
If your home is still in the UK and you are in Spain on holiday or for a long stay, you can bring your UK car in under Spain's temporary admission rules. The Spanish tax agency (the Agencia Tributaria) allows a maximum stay of six months. During that time the car must stay fully legal in the UK. That means it should remain taxed and insured, and have a valid MOT where one is required. You will also need a UK sticker on the car and headlamp beam deflectors, which we cover in our guide to keeping your car road legal in Spain.
Residents: a much shorter deadline
Once you become resident in Spain, the six-month rule no longer applies to you. This is one of the most common misunderstandings we hear from customers. Residents are not permitted to drive cars with foreign plates, and an imported car should be registered as soon as it arrives.
The Agencia Tributaria gives new residents 30 days to register an imported car. Under Spanish excise law, that deadline becomes 60 days when the car has come to Spain because its owner has moved home here and the registration tax exemption applies. In practice, we recommend starting the registration process as soon as your residency paperwork and padrón (your registration with the local town hall) are in place.
If you need to use the car while the registration is being processed, the DGT offers temporary green plates (placas verdes), which are valid for 60 days.
Why registering your car matters
Driving an unregistered foreign car as a resident can lead to a fine, and police can immobilise a vehicle that is not correctly documented. That can leave you without transport and facing extra costs to put things right.
There is also a tax consequence. If you keep using the car in Spain without registering it in time, the registration tax becomes payable anyway, and you risk losing the transfer of residence exemption that could otherwise have saved you a significant amount. Our guide to bringing your car tax-free explains that exemption in detail.
Finally, there is insurance. A UK policy is designed for a UK-registered car kept by a UK resident, and cover abroad is often limited in time. GOV.UK's guidance on driving in Spain notes that a UK insurance certificate is generally only valid for stays of less than three months, so always check with your insurer. Once you are resident, relying on a UK policy for a car that should be on Spanish plates is a risk we would never recommend.
